Is it common and ok for the groomer to hold the face fur when controlling the dog?

Very common, and it is painless.

Some dogs seem to find it a little annoying at first, but once they understand that it doesnt hurt and that the groomer is in control they adjust and get use to it.

If you have witnesses a dog pulling away from the groomer then just try to realize that it was probably a dog that maybe hasnt been groomed many times.

Just think of it as the hair dresser taking her hands and pointing your head in the direction she needs your head to cut your hair. Dogs are a little different, you cant place their head where you want it and expect them to leave it there.

That is...most of the time anyway. Is it common and ok for the groomer to hold the face fur when controlling the dog?
Of course this does not hurt the dog. When then grab a hold of the fur around the neck area it seems to let the dog know it time to stop moving around. Works with my dog.Is it common and ok for the groomer to hold the face fur when controlling the dog?
yes, common
yes, groomers have to control the dog without inflicting pain you can watch and tell if your dog is being abused
Groomers will do that , when they are working on the face area so not to cut or scratch the puppies eyes. Other than that I don't see where they have to do that.

*************Adding this*************

Groomer has a grooming table that a leash hooks around their neck. There is no reason for a groomer to groom a dog by holding on to its face hair other than making sure the dog stands still while grooming the face around the eyes or nose. You all can give me thumbs down all you want but I feel really strong about this. Any groomer did that to my dogs they wouldn't be grooming my dogs much longer. For another things if the groomer is busy holding on the dogs face hair how in the world is the groomer grooming the dog..They need both hands to groom a dog. God your answers just anger me to no end.
Absolutely. Safest for the groomer and the dog.
Sometimes, a groomer's gotta do what they can. Unless the dog was getting harmed, then I wouldn't worry about it.
Yes, it's fine. Either that, or the dog bites and your a** gets sued or your dog gets taken from you. Suck it up and let the professionals do their job. I hate owners who question the way I restrain a dog. I had one go so far as to ask ';Do you really need to put a leash on her?';

Added: Well, ';china,'; that little loop doesn't do a whole lot to stop a dog from biting now, does it? Have you seen how quick a dog can turn around and bite with no warning? I have. I have the scars to prove it. It doesn't matter what kind of dog, the little ones are the worst if you ask me. My little Lhasa will bite anyone who tries to groom her. What do I do? I hold her face. Sometimes it takes one person to restrain and one to work. Unless the loop is holding their muzzle, then there is really no control. Watch a dog flip out at the groomer's, and then tell me the neck loop is adequate restraint.
Yes. It is the best way to hold the head of the dog (to prevent biting) without harming the dog. Grabbing the neck can cause damage if the dog thrashes, so it is not a good option like someone else posted, plus the dog could still bite.
Its perfectly fine.

It's the groomer's painless method of letting the dog know who's boss, and keeping your pup under control.

Your dog would let the groomer know if it hurt, either by biting him, or by being insanely scared of him.
no most should hold on the neck fur like a mother holds her cubs
